“Turley, would you please KISS me! The shouting became louder, ‘No! No! No! “PLEASE – KISS!”. Then the wise old sage of a coach walked up behind me and whispered, “Turley, KISS means, Keep It Simple Stupid.” As a rookie coach 30 years ago, this transformational phrase of KISS still echoes in my ears. Recently, I have had the fortunate opportunity of coaching my son’s football team, reminding me how ‘the KISS’ is applicable not only to coaching but also to leadership, life, parenthood and business.
Keep the feeling — Most will remember the feeling of their first kiss. I repeatedly teach, myself and my young players, “if you don’t feel it you can’t change it” (behavior). In business, you cannot change anything until you have felt the pain (client, employee, or teenager) and remembered it. Once you lose the “feel” then the passion to change is nearly impossible.
Do you still feel it? Leaders, do you remember what it’s like to follow? Parents, do you remember what it’s like to be a 15-year-old girl or boy?
If you can’t feel it, then slowing down can be the best method of correction.
Inspire — Our football team has been crushed, often. After one crushing defeat as all the players were sitting on the bench with heads down, one of the players walked in front of everyone giving them all high-fives, and yelling, “Great effort, good job, great effort!” It was powerful moment to see the physical trail of his positive energy affect players on the bench. Even the coaches started to smile.
To KISS is simply hard to do in the dark.
Simple — In basketball my kids hear me say over and over again, “Same motion, same result.” Can you repeat it? Much of life is repeating the same motion, but if you don’t have good mechanics both mentally and physically then you will get the same negative result. Simple repeatable systems which can be measured and attained are important.
Often times we just need to simplify our motions.
Stupid — It’s much easier not to be stupid, if you tell the truth. Where in life are you not telling the full truth, whole truth and nothing but the truth? If not, I’ll show you complexity. Living in the darkness of deceit creates so much complexity therefore, it is difficult to lead or even follow anyone.
I’m notoriously an over-thinker, but when these simple truths are applied, I become much more Kissable…. Just sayin’.
